Japanese electronics giant Mitsubishi Electric India inaugurated its new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility at Gummidipoondi near Chennai, boosting local manufacturing with a Rs 2,100 crore investment.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the 210,000 square metre plant virtually from the Secretariat. Located on the Mahindra Origins campus, this marks the company’s second manufacturing unit in India, following its Factory Automation Systems plant in Pune opened in 2023.
The facility boasts an annual production capacity of 300,000 indoor and outdoor room air conditioner units and 650,000 compressors. It will create over 2,100 direct and indirect jobs while fostering a robust supplier ecosystem through local component sourcing, partner technical training, and skills development aligned with global standards.
By producing domestically, Mitsubishi aims to cut import reliance, build a self-reliant HVAC sector, and support India’s manufacturing goals, said company officials.
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa highlighted the state’s industrial prowess, noting it hosts around 40,000 factories, grows at 11.19%—the only state with double-digit expansion—and produces 31% of India’s electronics while accounting for 41% of electronic exports.
Atsushi Takase, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Electric India, emphasized the plant’s role in meeting surging demand for energy-efficient AC solutions. “This facility enables faster customer response, stronger quality control, and sustainable operations,” he said, positioning India as a core hub in the company’s global air conditioning business and underscoring its commitment to Tamil Nadu.
